In this dynamic lecture, which brings to light the ethics and philosophy behind the famous court cases that grapple with the concept of human rights as technologies surpass our understanding of their impact on society, you will learn about current Florida statutes on advance directives and other end of life issues.

Wednesday, July 25, 2007 - 7:30
Location: Arts & Minds Center
3138 Commodore Plaza, Miami, FL
As Green Architecture becomes more prevalent, architects take more of the natural environment into account in the design process. Observe the motion of a compass and it becomes obvious that we are live in the Earth's electromagnetic field. What impact does this have on the structures we live and work in and to what extent should we account for this in the design process? Prominent South Florida architect Robert Barnes has given this subject a good deal of thought. He shares his explorations with us and how he uses his discoveries in his own designs. .

Language and metaphysics are intimately related. Investigations into what there is must often begin with how we talk and what we say. Nowhere is this more true than in the philosophy of mind. Questions like “How old is the Universe?” and “What is it made of?” have occupied scientists for ages, and as they offer answers to these questions, we wonder “How do they actually know?” Modern cosmology has a solid foundation built on observations of the expanding universe, the formation of primordial elements, and the remnant light from the Big Bang known as the cosmic microwave background. Asst. Prof. Joshua Gundersen, UM, will present such cosmological data, which has recently ushered in the Golden Age of Cosmology, and he will offer a path that could resolve one of the oldest questions of all, "What was the Universe like in its first instant?" Torben Riise, PhD.

Wednesday , May 23, 2007 - 7:30 PM
Location: Abanico Theater - Arts & Minds Center
3138 Commodore Plaza, Miami, FL
We like to think we are in control of our actions, but new results in neuro-science indicate that that may be wishful thinking. What does that mean for e.g. criminal behavior and society's response to crime – and for our perception of being guilty? If we, by using biological intervention, can prevent or suppress criminal behavior, should we? And who should make the decision? If it can be used in crime, why not in other areas? In this thought-provoking presentation, Torben Riise, PhD, director of Center for Humanism, explores the frontier where science meets ethics. Be prepared to be challenged and to move some boundaries.

Mahler's fascinating life and all-encompassing music will be explored in a multi media presentation by Mahler expert Morton Slakoff, author, critic and lecturer at FIU and UM on romantic composers. Whether you are new to or a long admirer of romantic symphonic music, this evening will kindle your love for this musical era.

Location: Abanico Theater - Arts & Minds Center
3138 Commodore Plaza, Miami, FL
On the 50th anniversary of the opening of the South Pole Station, Miami artist Xavier Cortada arrived in Antarctica to create art. He used the 3 km thick glacial ice sheet that covers the South Pole as an instrument to mark time. Flags marked the location of the pole each year since 1956 and a symbolic ice "mangrove seedling" was planted at the location of the current pole. Through the movement of the ice sheet, it will reach the coastline of Antarctica in 150,000 years.By this juxtaposition of human and geological time, the artist invites us to reflect on our role on this planet and reaffirms the notion that we are merely custodians who should live in harmony with nature during the brief time we are here. Chakras act like wheels in the body taking in energy from the outside, organizing, processing and sending it back out again. No chakra stands alone – they all work in unison. As you cope with life, you choose to either increase (open) or decrease (close) the energy in your chakras.

Just when we managed to figure out the "E" in "E=MC2" stands for Energy and that we might be made up of Quarks, Leptons and a Bozon or two, along comes String Theory. String Theory? EInstein and Quantum Mechanics accurately explain the basic atomic and sub nuclear particles and forces but incorporating gravity into the mix leads to nonsense. String Theory is an alternative where point like particles are replaced by extended string-like objects. The miracle is that String Theory automatically appears to contain a consistent quantum theory of gravity but you do not get a free ride. Dr. Alvarez will help us to untangle the knots.
